Semitropic has executed a contract with Shell Solar to construct a one-Megawatt (MW) Solar Generation Facility. The electricity generated will be one of a number of energy sources feeding the district’s distribution system, which powers the pumps that move water. One of the potential uses of the solar energy will be generation of hydrogen to fuel the district’s fleet of vehicles.

Construction of the solar energy plant is scheduled for completion in late 2004. The total construction cost is approximately $6 million, about half of which is funded through grants, lessening the financial impact on the district.
